SHOOTING their way into the upper echelons of Victorian archery are ‘Joey’ archers Tian Mortimer and Alexandra Wright.
Tian, 10, from Beaconsfield, and Alexandra, 9, from Berwick, didn’t quiver or quake against their opposition at the recently held Archery Victoria state championships – instead shooting their way to gold in the Joey Sighted Recurve and Barebow Recurve disciplines respectively.
Tian found her way to the bow after a friend suggested she try out the long revered sport.
“I won the Joey Sighted Recurve,” Tian said.
“It was the first time I’ve been in a tournament and it’s really good to win it.
“I was at the market and saw my friend and they had archery down here and I tried it and liked it a lot.”
Alexandra is a seasoned pro when it comes to wielding her Barebow (a bow without a sight) and added the championship to the national title she won last year.
“It was good to get more medals and I find once you do more tournaments, the better you are as you’re less nervous and have more experience,” Alexandra said.
The duo shot for Phoenix Archery Club which is run by Alexandra’s grandfather Hans and father Darren – both national archery champions – and is based out of the City of Casey with archery training available at Cranbourne Life Be In It and Akoonah Park.
