MANY kids – and their parents- will be rejoicing next week when holidays come to an end and school resumes.
But while students are back to hitting the books, police are reminding parents and residents to hit the brakes.
Acting Sergeant Andrew Jones from the Pakenham Highway Patrol said police always received an influx of complaints about bad drivers, double parkers and near collisions when school resumed.
He said many parents were still in holiday mode when they dropped their kids off and were complacent about parking rules.
“Some parents double park or park illegally, so kids are in danger (when they get out of the car) because they aren’t crossing the street with a lollipop person,” Acting Sgt Jones said.
“Students need to cross the street in designated areas.”
Acting Sgt Jones reminded not only parents, but all drivers, to slow down in school zones and obey road signs.
“Everyone has just had two weeks driving at another speed, so they need to remember that school zones are back to normal and the need to obey all signs in the area- they are there for a reason,” he said.
