Big boys’ games

Commonwealth Games, Channel Ten/One, daily.
CHANNEL Ten is hosting the Commonwealth Games right? Yeah that’s what I thought.
Though, to be honest, unless it’s later in the evening, most of the live coverage seems to be on One or some app somewhere.
OK, they are the same channels but surely an ailing network would play its strong suit on its main channel?
I remember the time when all things stopped for the Commonwealth Games but earlier this week the games were relegated to One while MasterChef held court on Ten?
Surely it could have been timed so that it didn’t happen during the games? Or is that the plan – get us watching MasterChef and then keep us there for the games?
Who knows but it does seem to be working with Ten enjoying some of its best weeks on the ratings for a while (the ABC isn’t beating them for a change).
But is Ten doing our games coverage proud? Well that’s the question isn’t it? Maybe it is, though, I mean it’s not an Olympics or a Comm Games without us all complaining about the coverage, right?
Doesn’t matter what channel it is – they usually cop it for something.
The hockey and netball fans have been loud and vocal on Twitter and Facebook this week complaining about not being able to find their matches or only getting snatches of their events.
I’m sure this will change as we head towards the pointy end for both sports (because it would be a shock if the Aussies didn’t win all the gold going in those disiciplines and we all love a winner).
That’s probably why the coverage so far has been swimming heavy – it’s fast and easy to watch and we win lots.
The other major criticism, other than the lack of chemistry between Mel McLaughlin and Ian Thorpe, has been the over abundance of chat and the under abundance of actual live action.
Look, the broadcaster is never going to please all of the people all of the time.
It should be easier now with multi channels and an app for everything but we will always complain – it’s part of the fun.
Do I think Ten is doing well? Well more Matt White and less Mel McLaughlin might help but other than that – Games coverage is always a fraught with danger – at least next time we can all go out and watch it live on the Gold Coast!
