The Footy liftout
Russell Bennett delves into the latest talk surrounding the future of the Ellinbank and District Football League, including an approach from the Alberton League to speak with three local clubs.
The Gazette understands that Alberton has sought permission to speak with Nyora, Poowong and Lang Lang (the Saints and Magpies being long-time EDFL members) to gauge their interest in making a switch for the 2015 season and beyond. Representatives from both Poowong and Lang Lang acknowledged they’ve been approached for talks – but nothing more, or nothing less at this stage.
David Nagel reports that the PCN Sports Alliance’s interest in the EDFL West’s seven clubs has been put on the backburner, with a two-year ban on recruiting them if negotiations failed.
The Gazette delves into why leagues and clubs must tread carefully as a comprehensive review of football in the south-east corridor looms large.
On field in the EDFL, Kooweerup enjoyed another impressive win thanks largely to special performances from Luke Walker and Craig Dyker. Demons coach Matt Shorey had extra reason to celebrate – having already been re-appointed by the club for next year.
Cora Lynn defeated Lang Lang by 59 points – honouring milestone captain Tim Payne in style.
Turning to Casey Cardinia – Cranbourne held its 125th Anniversary Ball and Hall of Fame Dinner; and Beaconsfield hosted a reunion of its 1974 and 2004 premiership sides in a weekend when the real fabric of local football came to the fore. The warriors of the two current Eagles teams collided on Saturday, with Beaconsfield’s win over Cranbourne the highlight of round 15.

Jarrod Potter wraps up the Glasgow Commonwealth Games from a local perspective – with articles on the coach of Casey TigerSharks medallists Josh Beaver and Matson Lawson, Ben Hiddlestone; and Kookaburras gold medallist and hat-trick hero Chris Ciriello. He also previews the footy finals for the South East Juniors Youth Girls, interviews Tooradin-Dalmore ‘Little Legend’ Jesse Craven, and presents the latest ‘Sports of All Sorts’.
David Nagel writes on the Pakenham Cricket Club’s Premier side, and its refusal to take a backward step in the upcoming WGCA season. Russell Bennett speaks with Upper Beaconsfield Cricket Club president Scott Pitcher and new player-coach Chris Savage; and also talks about the business end of the Pakenham Silverbacks’ enthralling debut Gridiron Victoria season.
