CAREFUL collecting paid off for a resident of Millhaven Lodge in Pakenham, last week.
On Monday 4 August, resident Ron Stevens rushed down to the morning newspaper reading at the lodge, with a story of his own.
He had an edition of “The Star’, an English newspaper which was 100 years old and dated 4 August 1914. He has also collect The Daily Express, and papers which detail events such as Churchill’s funeral in 1965, and Princess Diana’s.
He showed the paper to the diversional therapist at the lodge Raema Failla, who read out articles from the paper, comparing stories from then and now.
The 100-year-old paper belonged to Mr Stevens’ father, who fought in WWI.
Mr Stevens has been at Millhaven since 2012 and was described by Ms Failla as “a bit of a hoader”.
Newspapers aren’t all he has collected, and apparently has a room full of different dated belongings.
