SPORT: The Week in Review

By THE GAZETTE SPORT TEAM

THE FOOTY LIFTOUT
MICHAEL Collins’ 200th game was the feel-good story of round 16 in Casey Cardinia as David Nagel reports. But, in contrast, news that Keysborough has officially decided to leave the competition and head to the Southern Football League from 2015 is sad yet understandable.
In other CCFL news, an exciting group of up-and-coming Tooradin youngsters toppled Berwick, and some sharp-shooting from Kerem Baskaya and Marc Holt led Narre Warren and Cranbourne (respectively) to massive wins.
This week, Cranbourne and Pakenham will bring an early taste of September when an all-important double chance goes on the line.

Russell Bennett writes about how Nar Nar Goon recorded a drought-breaking Ellinbank and District Football League win over arch-rivals Cora Lynn. Almost unbelievably – prior to Saturday’s two-goal win, the Goon hadn’t defeated the Cobras since the 2010 grand final.
Elsewhere in the West, the struggling Catani took the fight right up to a powerful Garfield side at Taplins Road, with Blues player-coach Josh Tymensen declaring: “I just didn’t see the point of playing defensively in the last quarter – we spoke about trying to win at three-quarter time”.
Out East, the top three sides – Longwarry, Buln Buln and the Warragul Industrials all recorded huge wins with the Lyrebirds’ 28.19 (187) the highest score from any team in the competition to date this season.

Elsewhere in the liftout, David Nagel devotes the ‘Beer O’Clock’ page to Keysborough – reporting further on the Burra’s switch to the SFL, and catching up with 1976 premiership player and dual best-and-fairest winner John Robertson.

Jarrod Potter takes a long, hard look at the humble roast beef roll at Lyndale Football Club for ‘What’s Cooking’, reviews Port Melbourne’s big win over Casey in the VFL and reports on the launch of the Yun Yun Scorpions Development Program.

IN the general sport section, Jarrod Potter writes on Berwick’s teenage queen of the velodrome Courtney Field, local jumps jockey Steven Pateman’s opportunity of a lifetime in New York, and all the latest on the South East Juniors finals.

Russell Bennett speaks with current Hampton Park senior footy coach Matt O’Neil about the glory days of his 2004 Gembrook Cockatoo YVMDFL premiership in the wake of the side’s 10-year reunion, recaps young Upper Beaconsfield star racer Jack Le Brocq’s impressive performance at Queensland Raceway, and wraps up the Pakenham Silverbacks’ debut Gridiron Victoria season.
