KOOWEERUP celebrated Australia Day in style with a standing room only event at the Community Centre.
Australia Day ambassador Dr Hugh Wirth was the guest speaker on the day, while local men, women and children received recognition for their efforts in building a stronger community.
Dr Wirth spoke of the hardships and tragedies that had befallen our nation in recent times and the characteristically Australian way we had reacted to them.
“Amid all this turmoil, we are still a compassionate and caring society that looks after its own,“ he said.
Dr Wirth paid tribute to the local community for hosting such a wonderful day.
“The great turnout shows you don’t have to go to Melbourne or the large provincial centres to celebrate Australia Day,“ he said.
Citizen Awards were given to local educator Jane Coupe, Kooweerup Football Club stalwart Tony Cammarano, cricket champion Matt Davey and community legend Muriel Winter.
Ms Winter, who was not aware that she was going to receive her award for outstanding community service, was clearly chuffed with the official recognition.
“I’m completely blown away,“ the 91-year-old said.
Kaye Feltham, who nominated Ms Winter, had a simple explaination as to why the long-term community volunteer had received the award.
“Because she is a special lady,“ she said.
In receiving his award, Mr Cammarano paid tribute to the spirit of inclusiveness that makes Australia great.
“My parents came out here from Italy on a ship 50 years ago with nothing,“ he said.
