A DRIVER with $40,000 worth of outstanding fines tried to evade police carrying out a traffic patrol in Menzies Creek last week.
Almost 2900 cars were scanned by Cardinia Highway Patrol along Wellington Road on Tuesday 17 March using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.
The four-hour patrol identified approximately $250,000 worth of outstanding traffic fines, as well as 16 unregistered cars and five cars with defects.
Police have warned the recognition system will be active throughout the next few months at random locations across Cardinia Shire.
Cardinia Highway Patrol Sergeant Allen Inderwisch was also pleased to report there were no road traumas during the Labour Day long weekend.
“We breath-tested 111 people and only detected one drink driver,” he said.
“While it’s disappointing we did get one, we are happy most drivers got the message.”
Operation Avid, which ran from Friday 6 March until Monday 9 March, detected 84 road offences.
“The majority of offences related to exceeding speed limits,” Sgt Inderwisch said.
He said extra police would be on the roads again for the Easter holidays.
