TWO trips to Nepal were life-changing for Brett Hillier, and now he’s determined to give back.
The tennis coach at Beaconhills College felt compelled to help after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the region, killing over 7000 people and injuring more than 14,000.
Along with friend and fellow tennis coach Darren Cordy, Hillier will undertake a 150 kilometre run to raise money for charity ‘Care Australia.’
Brett says his visits to the region put the destruction in perspective.
“Obviously, it was such a devastating disaster, and we needed to find some way to help,” he said.
“I’ve been to Nepal twice, and it changed me as a person quite a lot. To be in a third world country and see how happy the people are with their family, the clothes on their back and a warm meal, it’s pretty unbelievable.
“For this to happen is just devastating.
The pair will begin their ultramarathon in Foster at 9pm on 22 May. Running throughout the night and the next day, Brett estimates that they will arrive at the Upper Beaconsfield tennis club around 6pm the next day.
They will be supported throughout the run by Rumbles Paleo. After arriving at the tennis club, a barbecue will be held to raise further funds.
The damage from the Nepal earthquake continues to grow. Funds are required to facilitate basic needs such as emergency shelter, medical assistance, food and access to clean water.
Together, Brett and Darren hope to raise $10,000 for the cause. To donate, visit www.facebook.com/satoriway and follow the links.
