CARDINIA’S 4Cs is appealing for help from the public to cope with increased demand during winter months.
The charity experiences up to four times the demand for help throughout the colder period, and rely on donations from the public to continue operations.
Among many other services, the Cardinia charity provides food and toiletries to residents in need.
Operations manager Abiola Ajetomobi said winter was a particularly busy period.
“It’s one of our challenges to make sure that families aren’t left out in the cold or living in their car,” she said.
“People get sick in winter and many can’t cope. There are more expenses in trying to heat the house and buy warm clothing.
“One thing is very evident – everyone is referring these people back to the 4Cs,” she said.
A significant amount of the food is collected from the producers, Foodbank Victoria and the general public.
Abiola hoped that local businesses would be willing to partner with the charity.
“Hopefully, we can get businesses that supply food and essentials, maybe a butcher, to help out regularly. We need to form strong relationships in the community,” she said.
“We are always looking for more donations, but particularly toiletries at the moment.”
The 4Cs has a process of distribution to those in crisis, where people are registered and then provided assistance.
“It’s important that we are able to provide help to those who need it most,” Abiola said.
The assistance centre is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 3pm. Identification must be shown to prove residency in the shire before accessing the food room.
