Allegations get silent treatment

RUSSELL Broadbent has offered a flat “no comment” after being named in a Four Corners/Fairfax report on alleged connections between the Liberal Party and underworld figures.
The Gazette asked the McMillan MP’s office if the reports were true that he had hosted the brother of a known criminal in Parliament House and introduced him to other parliamentarians.
According to the Four Corners report, the known criminal successfully lobbied to have his deportation order overturned by then Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone. Mr Broadbent’s office offered only a “no comment“ to Gazette inquiries about the veracity of the reports.
The latest report comes after Mr Broadbent and other Victorian Liberal MPs were previously linked to a fund-raising event involving underworld figures.
Mr Broadbent has never addressed the allegations.
Asked why Mr Broadbent refused to speak publicly about such serious media reports, his office said the MP would not comment.
