CAUGHT up in a senseless spree of vehicular vandalism this morning was Garfield sportsman Lachlan Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald, 19, was left to clean up extensive damage to his Holden, just one of many vehicles targeted along Kooyong Road, Armadale.
In the early hours, between 4am and 5am, at least 20 cars along Kooyong Road, among others, had their windows broken in a widespread attack.
Fitzgerald’s car had two of its windows smashed in the spree.
The former gymnast lives in the city while training with the Australian Aerial Skiing team.
His mum Kelly Fitzgerald said while her son didn’t have any possessions taken in the incident, he was significantly shaken up to find both front windows smashed.
“He’s pretty upset – he went out to go to work and he saw a window open – he thought he left it open – but went around to the other side and saw both were broken,” Ms Fitzgerald said.
“It’s just random I think – I think they’ve (Victoria Police) put it down as a smash and grab.
“They (the perpetrators) took things and chucked them outside – took them out – but from what I know no-one had anything of value in his car.”
Fitzgerald said the damage to her son’s car was estimated at $1100, as well as the financial burden associated with missing a day’s work and having to sort out his insurance excess.
“Now that he’s got his car back he’s going a bit better but he works hard for his possessions and works hard to take care of them,” Ms Fitzgerald said.
Victoria Police confirmed it was investigating the incident which also targeted cars along two other streets in Caulfield.
