AN afternoon of bush poetry, music and storytelling was enjoyed by about 200 people who attended the opening event of the Garfield Winterfest held in the former Garfield Picture Theatre in the Main Street last Saturday.
Poets were able to read their own original poems, while others recited works by Henry Lawson, CJ Dennis and John O’Brien. Pat Wakefield compered the 1 August event.
The picture theatre brought back many happy memories to local poet Gerard Cunningham from Garfield North.
“I remember Dad taking me to the pictures here, where mostly Westerns were shown in those days and then walking down the street to buy a milk shake during interval. I haven’t been inside this theatre since those days in the 50s,” he said.
Pat said that most of his recreational youth was spent watching movies inside the theatre.
The shops in the main street had been decorated inside and out, with some displaying historic memorabilia in their windows.
Many people took the opportunity to walk along the footpath and view the window displays. The Winterfest will continue this Sunday 9 August with an antiques market from 9am – 4pm at the Garfield Community Centre in Beswick Street.
Market stalls will be undercover. There will also be a “silent auction”
