Buyers rush in for prime cattle

There were approximately 370 export and 600 young cattle penned at VLE Pakenham, representing an increase of nearly 200 head week-on-week.
There was a full field of buyers present and competing with a sense of urgency for the limited selection of prime cattle on offer.
Quality was mixed with a good selection of secondary and plainer cattle which sold to stronger demand from lot feeders and restockers.
The handful of vealers suited to butcher orders gained 10 cents to 15 cents per kilogram for most and more in places.
Yearling steers and heifers to the trade lifted 10 cents to 20 cents and up to 27 cents per kilogram for the heavy end of the heifer draft.
Feeder steers sold up to 15 cents per kilogram dearer.
Grown steers and bullocks improved 10 cents to 15 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight grown heifers gained 12 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight Friesian and crossbred manufacturing steers lifted 11 cents to 13 cents per kilogram.
The vealers sold mostly from 300 cents to 357 cents per kilogram.
Yearling trade steers made between 317 cents and 350 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight grown heifers sold between 284 cents and 324 cents per kilogram. Heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers made from 262 cents to 288 cents with the crossbred portion from 276 cents to 315 cents per kilogram.
