PLAY was suspended at the Officer Recreation Reserve over the weekend following reports that an angry spectator had made threats and mentioned a gun.
However, police yesterday confirmed that no firearm was found and no person at the ground was in danger.
A position statement released by the SEJ (South East Junior Football League) on Sunday evening said that play ceased and police were immediately called.
“Games held at the Officer Recreation Reserve this morning were disrupted after alleged serious verbal threats were made by a person – not associated with Officer Kangaroos or any visiting clubs.
“Victoria Police were immediately contacted and when they advised it was safe to do so, remaining games scheduled at the venue resumed as normal and without incident.
“The safety of our participants is always our number one priority and we commend the club personnel at the Officer Kangaroos for acting quickly and appropriately in this instance.”
Pakenham Police Senior Sergeant Nathan Prowd said that police attended the ground and investigated the reports.
“There were concerns in relation to comments mentioning a firearm made by someone in attendance at the game.
“The league decided to suspend play, which was a decision supported by the police.”
He said they found no evidence of any weapon.
“Police officers checked on a person in relation to the incident, but no firearm was produced or sighted.
“There was no person in danger at the game.”
It is believed the altercation occurred after the man’s wife was told to stop taking photographs at the match.
The president of the Officer Junior Football Club was contacted, but declined to comment.
