Artist takes thoughtful look at what we idolise

PAKENHAM artist Annette Slattery will be showcasing her artwork at her show Icona in Berwick next week.
Ms Slattery’s solo show looks at the Mona Lisa in a new light, comparing it to celebrity figures, religion and other art forms.
“Humans have created icons from the caveman times in animals and religious icons and even today we still worship actors and musicians and sportspeople,” she said.“The Mona Lisa is probably the most famous artwork in the world so it seems like a good vehicle to discuss our social need for idolisation.”
Ms Slattery, also president of the Cardinia Art Society and vice-president of the South Eastern Contemporary Art Network (SECAN), said the show will feature sculptures, paintings, printmaking, graffiti and an art form she invented, bottle top tapestry.
“I don’t know anyone else who’s doing work in this particular way. I figure if I invented it I can name it,” she said.
The show is the first exhibition at the new gallery Gate 6, founded by SECAN.
“We’re very proud of our new space. It’s taken a lot of work and generosity to get it looking as good as it is,” Ms Slattery said.
Icona opens Saturday 5 September, and runs from Thursday to Sunday, noon to 4pm, until 27 September. Entry is free.
