MOVE over Channel Ten – Victorian students have their own spelling bee.
Last Wednesday, St. Francis Xavier College hosted VicSpell, a competition aimed at finding the best speller in each year level in Victorian schools, from Years 5-8.
Students from 11 schools, including Beaconsfield Primary and Keysborough Secondary College, competed at the Berwick campus in the western zone final.
The judges were VicSpell Committee members Norman McLennan and Trevor Sowdon.
The college’s Learning Enhancement students organised a barbecue for competing students and guests.
St. Francis Xavier College students Tayla Gordon and Chailyn D’Souza, in Years 7 and 8 respectively, were the top students in their year levels and are moving on to the state final.
Adam Gordon, a teacher at St. Francis Xavier College, said students enjoyed the event.
“All students enjoyed themselves and loved meeting students from other schools who share their passion for spelling,” he said.
The state final is held on Wednesday 9 September at Lavalla College, Traralgon.
