THE Cat in the Hat, Tin Tin and Mary Poppins were among a swag of storybook characters gathered at Chairo Christian School on Friday morning 28 August.
The school hosted a dress-up day to celebrate book week, a nation-wide initiative of the Children’s Book Council of Australia to celebrate books and reading in schools.
Students could either come dressed as a book character or to the theme ‘Books Light Up Our World’.
A special highlight of the week was a visit from children’s author Danny Katz, who entertained and engaged students with stories from the ‘Little Lunch’ book series, currently screening on ABC3. His advice was simple – write stories about your own experiences.
Other activities included making pasta necklaces from the Young Reader’s Book of the Year, ‘Cleo Stories, the Necklace and the Present’ and making Chinese lanterns that reflected the Book Week theme.
Teacher/librarian Jo Bridgman said it was a great opportunity to encourage students to read and enjoy books.
“It’s been a fantastic week of fun and activities at Chairo Christian School’s Pakenham Campus during Book Week,” she said.
“Students and teachers have gone to great efforts in dressing up as book characters for our book parade”.
