Market down for poor finish

141461_03

There were approximately 800 export and 830 young cattle penned at the Victorian Livestock Exchange representing an increase of 600 head week-on-week.
There was a smaller field of buyers present and operating selectively in a cheaper market.
Quality was mixed with a larger offering of vealers and better quality in the grown steers and bullocks while many of the young grass cattle lacked finish.
The increase in numbers is partly in response to a rapidly deteriorating season across the supply area. Vealers and yearling cattle suited to the trade sold 20 cents per kilogram to 30c/kg cheaper with the feeder lines recording similar results.
Grown steers and bullocks slipped 24 cents to 31 cents for the larger and better quality selection.
Heavy weight Friesian and crossbred manufacturing steers fell 29 cents to 33 cents.
The vealers sold mostly from 260 cents to 310 cents after a top of 329c/kg.
Yearling trade steers made between 285 cents and 312 cents.
Yearling heifers to the trade sold between 248 cents and 310 cents. Feeder steers made from 244 cents to 290 cents with the heifer portion from 240 cents to 285 cents.
Grown steers sold from 263 cents to 294 cents.
Bullocks made between 270 cents and 295 cents.
Heavy weight bullocks sold between 259 cents and 273 cents.
Heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers made from 230 cents to 249 cents with the crossbred portion from 225 cents to 274 cents.
