THERE were approximately 800 export and 750 young cattle penned at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange this week representing an increase of nearly 700 head week-on-week.
The regular buying group was present and competing with a new domestic trade order in a dearer market.
Quality was mixed in the young drafts but improved in the much larger selection of export cattle.
The better vealers suited to butcher orders sold firm while the secondary calves gained up to 20 cents per kilogram.
Yearling steers and heifers to the trade kicked up 15 cents to 20 cents with the top sales being a limited selection of grain assisted calves while the feeder lines were 10 cents to 30 cents dearer.
Grown steers and bullocks improved eight cents to 11 cents driven by strong demand and better quality. Heavy weight grown heifers showing good finish lifted seven cents.
Heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers gained seven cents while the crossbred portion improved by three cents.
