THERE were approximately 750 export and 800 young cattle penned for a similar overall yarding number week-on-week at this week’s Victorian Livestock Exchange.
The usual buying group was present and operating in a firm trade sale but cheaper for the grown steers and bullocks.
Quality was very mixed with a larger proportion of the young draft showing the effects of the dry summer while prime grown steers and bullocks were few and far between.
Most categories which showed a cheaper average were affected by quality although there were some disappointing sales on the day.
The heavy weight vealers sold firm while a larger supply of lighter weights eased a few cents.
Yearling cattle to the trade sold from firm to five cents per kilogram easier.
Medium weight feeder steers eased five cents.
Grown steers and bullocks sold two to four cents cheaper with the odd isolated sale up to 10 cents back.
Heavy weight vealers suited to butcher orders sold from 288 cents to 325 cents.
Yearling trade steers made between 290 cents and 321 cents.
Yearling heifers to the trade sold between 265 cents and 315 cents.
Medium weight feeder steers made from 270 cents to 308 cents with the heifer portion from 258 cents to 298 cents.
Grown steers sold from 262 cents to 287 cents.
Bullocks made between 276 cents and 289 cents.
Heavy weight friesian manufacturing steers sold between 232 cents and 244 cents with the crossbred portion between 240 cents and 282 cents.
