Fourth term kills off warriors

By RUSSELL BENNETT

IN WHAT was hardly a game for the ages, the Pakenham Warriors went down by 14 points to the Collingwood All-Stars 67-53 in Round Five of the Division Two Big V men’s basketball season on Saturday night.
The Warriors opened up with a 19-point first quarter to lead by five at the first break but finished the clash with just four points in a horror fourth term which saw them shoot just 10 per cent from the field.
The Pakenham side shot less than 30 per cent overall (including 15 per cent from downtown), while also losing the turnover count 21-16.
In a game Jeff Reid’s men would sooner forget, both Hayden Davey (21 points, 12 boards and two steals) and captain Paul Phillips (12 points and 10 boards) finished with double-doubles.
The weekend wasn’t any more kind to the Warriors’ women’s side either, with Blackburn storming to victory 90-39.
The Warriors were within six points at the end of the first quarter, but scored single digits in each of the next three to suffer another heavy loss.
Pakenham’s Youth League Two men’s side, meanwhile, also went down 71-58 against Casey at the Cranbourne Basketball Stadium.
The Warriors led after the first quarter but couldn’t maintain it as four Cavaliers players finished scoring double figures.
Pakenham, meanwhile, was led by Lee Belton (eight points and 10 rebounds) and Lewis Newman (10 points and seven boards) with near double-doubles.
