WARTIME legacies and heritage sites in Cardinia Shire will be preserved for generations to come under a new taxpayer-funded strategy.
Those in possession of war-related objects will soon have the opportunity to have their memorabilia examined by a team of experts and preserved for years to come as part of the State Government’s Veterans Heritage and History Strategy.
The strategy will also map existing war heritage sites, including avenues of honour, and better identify the heritage sites that need protection or support.
The government will then establish the War Heritage and History Collections Training Program aimed at helping ex-service organisations identify items of significance, develop preservation and education plans, and digitalise their catalogues.
Member for Eastern Victoria Region Daniel Mulino said the strategy aimed to preserve the legacy of the region’s servicemen and women who fought for the nation in war.
“Cardinia has a proud wartime history, and it’s our duty to preserve our past for future generations to cherish,” he said.
“I encourage local ex-service organisations to consider how this strategy may help them preserve their important belongings.”
The strategy will be rolled out later this year.
