Steers and vealers lead

THE Wednesday fat sale last week at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange contained an extra 220 head, with steers and vealers making up most of the yarding.
Several pen lots of lighter stores saw extra attention from re-stockers and feedlots, although there were also more penned in the secondary section as vendors start to plan for a winter with less feed available.
Demand in the secondary pens eased last week as processors tended to stand back a little.
Heifer weights averaged lighter as well and pulled the average back in this category with the heavier end of the heifers recording a lift in prices with the top rising to 323.2 cents.
The yard average slipped four cents to 269 cents, helped by the fact that vealer pens sold to stronger demand and lifting their average by seven cents.
Bullocks were non-existent with only one yarded on the day.
A total of 55 heifers made to 323.2 cents, up 27 cents, and averaged 255.9 cents, back 10 cents, 103 steers made to 310 cents, back 16 cents, and averaged 249 cents, back 39 cents, and 287 vealers made to 332.2 cents, firm, and averaged 282.6 cents, up seven cents.
Extra numbers were also recorded for the Thursday bull and cow sale with 150 more yarded than last week,
Twenty-nine bulls sold to firm demand with lighter weights evident and a few smaller bulls on offer.
The top was 278.6 cents and the average was 230.7 cents, 17 bullocks sold to a top of 283.6 cents to average 237.7 cents, and there were 571 cows yarded selling to 257.2 cents and averaging firm at 180.8 cents with the yard average two cents better at 185.1 cents.
