LAST week’s Wednesday fat sale at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange consisted mainly of vealers with a handfull of heifers and steers.
Vealer prices remained strong with the top still in the mid to high 340 cent mark.
Quality in the better pens is still very high as prices indicate, heifers remained firm in the better pens but the secondary pens struggled for competition, and steer quality in the secondary pens has slipped in recent weeks keeping processors at arm’s length.
The week’s yard average was back five cents to 280.7 cents.
A total of 29 heifers topped at 300 cents, back 17 cents, and averaged 234.3 cents, back 41 cents, 30 steers topped at 306 cents, back 24 cents and averaged 249.7 cents, back 43 cents and 360 veal topped at 345 cents, back three cents and averaged 291.9 cents, up two cents.
Numbers on Thursday dropped drastically in comparison to last week with 489 head yarded.
Only eight bulls were penned and topped at 277.2 cents to average 223.8 cents and 468 cows made to a top of 292.6 cents for a one-off well finished heifer, with the rest of the yarding reaching a top of 263.6 cents, firm on last week.
Cows last week averaged four cents better at 175.8 cents and the yarding was also up four cents to 178.7 cents.
