Candidate meets the people

Labor candidate for McMillan Chris Buckingham addressed English language students at Living and Learning Pakenham.

LABOR candidate for McMillan Chris Buckingham spent an afternoon with students at Living and Learning Pakenham in Henry Street on Tuesday.
He was invited to speak to participants in Living Learning’s English language students about Australian politics.
The initial presentation was on how the electoral system works and why we are having a double dissolution election this time around.
The question and answer session covered a wide variety of topics including health, education, defence, refugee policy, community safety, employment issues and the need for compulsory voting.
Nearly 40 people from 17 different countries participated in the session.
Mr Buckingham reflected on his own background as a migrant and how important it was that Australia remain a safe and welcoming country that celebrated the values of ‘a fair go for all’.
“The things that unite us are far greater than the things that divide,“ he said.
“Visiting Living and Learning has been one of the highlights of my campaign so far. Pakenham is a diverse community with people coming from all over the world to make a good life here.”
