CONSTRUCTION sites within new estates under development are becoming growing targets for thieves, according to Pakenham police.
Numerous items were burgled from residential housing sites under construction in Officer estates within 24 hours.
Electrical wiring to the value of about $1000 was stripped from one of the premises overnight on 16 May in Saffron Avenue, Aspect estate. On the following night basins, tap handles, sinks and door knobs were stolen from two sites in Burgess Avenue, The Rise estate.
Cardinia Crime Investigation Unit detective Sergeant Duane McDonald said that while such areas were patrolled by police, they were increasingly being targeted due to poor street lighting and lack of surveillance cameras.
“We advise construction workers to minimise the risks of items being stolen. If materials aren’t bolted in, don’t leave them lying around,” Det Sgt McDonald said.
“Often these thieves will sell the copper or put items up for sale on Gum Tree and they’re difficult to trace.
