GEORGE Blenkhorn will this year hang up his hat after eight years’ service as a Cardinia Shire councillor.
Now 76, Cr Blenkhorn will retire at the election on Saturday 22 October, making room for a new face.
He is so far the only councillor to have publicly announced their retirement.
On his retirement, he said: “I don’t want to be 80 years old sitting on council. I don’t think the community want an 80-year-old councillor, either.”
Cr Blenkhorn served two council terms and was mayor in 2011.
Improvements to youth disability will go down as some of his greatest achievements on council.
“My greatest legacy would be the development of Officer Specialist School and advocating for early intervention for children with physically and intellectual disabilities at Henry Family Children’s Centre,” he reflected.
“It’s something I will always be very comfortable with having passed on my time in council.”
Nominations for the Cardinia Shire Council election will open on Thursday 15 September and close at 12noon on Tuesday 20 September.
