A MAN has died in hospital overnight following a reported assault at a Pakenham home.
Police said the 70-year-old man was found unconscious in what was believed to be a boarding house in Thomas Place when they arrived about 3.38pm on Thursday 21 July after a report of an assault.
Police began CPR on the man until paramedics arrived.
He was transferred to hospital in a serious condition but police said he died about 2am on Friday.
A 47-year-old man was taken into custody and is assisting police with their inquiries.
Pakenham Police Senior Sergeant Graeme Stanley said an autopsy was currently underway and that the results may provide grounds for criminal charges.
He said the men were housemates.
A witness said four police cars and three ambulances responded to the report and that police were taking photographs at the cordoned off scene until late at night.
“A body was taken out by the ambulance and police took a man from the property into custody,” the witness said.
“The area was cordoned off with police tape.”
