HOW many dimmies can you scoff down in five minutes?
That’s the challenge on offer at Sally’s Big Ass Burgers on Saturday 24 September.
The challenge is a first for burger-flipping Sally – known to many for her big behind and big personality which has served to shake things up in Upper Beaconsfield.
Five minutes may not seem like a long time – but Sally’s dim sim eating competition won’t be easy.
With a wicked laugh, Sally revealed the challenge dim sims would be fried – unlike all other comps which serve ’em up steamed.
“We are upping the ante. They are going to be chewier, harder to swallow and scratch your throat on the way down,” she laughed.
Condiments may be the last thing ‘scoffers’ reach for during the rapid five-minute challenge, but Sally assured tomato and soy sauce would be on hand to lubricate entrants’ throats.
For a cost of $15 per person, you get unlimited dim sims to complete the challenge. Best of all, winners takes all PLUS a bit of a tongue-in-cheek trophy.
Sally predicted about 30 people would take part in their first ever dim sim scoff-off, making the take home winnings $450.
The competition will complete a day of music and market activity at Sally’s Big Ass Burgers.
Loyal to the Beat, at beatbox duo best known for their appearance on Australia’s Got Talent, will be performing throughout the day, accompanying several different market stalls selling locally goods including jam, candles and plants.
The hotly anticipated dim sim scoff-off will take place at 3pm.
Since Sally set up shop in Upper Beaconsfield four years ago, she has cooked up some 25,000 burgers – including just under 1000 of her starring ‘Big Ass’ burger.
It’s one of many favourites which include the the Bogan, Ring Stinger, Fat Boy and the CFA burger in tribute to the neighbouring fire-fighters.
If the competition goes well, Sally will host it again next year.
“I love having fun. And if anyone can do stupid and fun, it’s me,” Sally laughed.
Sally – and her controversial business name – have long divided residents in Upper Beaconsfield, some of whom lobbied Cardinia Shire Council to have the sign removed.
But she says she’s here to stay – and possibly, multiply.
Sally is looking toward expanding her burger joint, ideally in the St Kilda area.
The ‘big ass’ reference trails back to her younger years when she, sister of four siblings, was nicknamed fat ass, lard ass and big ass.
“I get a lot of people asking me to turn around to look at it. They say, ‘It’s not that big!’”
