THE CFA has issued a warning after a Pakenham factory fire emitted “thick, black smoke” on Monday afternoon.
Residents have been advised to avoid the area near Sharnet Circuit and Pine Hill Drive where it was understood that chemicals caught fire while employees were welding.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined and investigations are continuing.
Pakenham CFA senior station officer Scott Shenfield said the seven fire vehicles managed to contain the fire with four hoses.
“On arrival, there was thick black toxic smoke issued from the factory with zero visibility,” Mr Shenfield said.
“Four employees, including the owner, were inside the premises at the time of the fire.
“There was minor smoke damage to four neighbouring factories and a crack in an adjoining wall to the immediate neighbouring factory.”
Sergeant Danny Hower said the road was closed off for several hours from about 3.40pm on Monday 10 October for safety reasons while police investigated the scene.
“Neighbouring factories have been evacuated,” Sgt Hower said.
“There were no injuries and there will be an investigation into what caused the fire.“
Seven fire vehicles and three police units responded to the incident.
Those experiencing symptoms that may be due to smoke exposure were advised to seek medical advice or call NURSE-ON-CALL on 1300 60 60 24.
Anyone experiencing wheezing, chest tightness and difficulty in breathing were urged to call triple-zero.
