PAKENHAM students have unleashed their creative side in a new approach to learning through computer animation.
Years 11 and 12 students at the Education Centre Gippsland (ECG) community college Pakenham campus have designed and produced their own three-dimensional animated videos.
VCAL student Brendan Catheray-Lunson said the program had inspired him to begin his own YouTube channel for animation videos.
“I’ve really enjoyed the creative side and learning something totally new,” he said.
“When I started, I never expected to achieve this much. We learnt how to use the software, design and create characters and sets step by step into a full animation.
“While I have done computer studies in the past – mainly software and web coding – I’ve never learnt the creative side of animation. It’s something totally new for me and I have really enjoyed it.”
The videos would be included in a portfolio for further study or work opportunities.
Head of the school Jamie Robertson said the newly introduced program had helped engage young people to learn and create.
“Students have to interact with the content and learn in a deep way to design and produce something entirely original,” she said.
“They develop a set of skills across literacy, numeracy, communication, problem solving and more.”
ECG College is an independent alternative senior secondary school established by Community College Gippsland for young people aged between 15 and 20 who are seeking a hands-on option to complete senior secondary studies and learn skills for work or further training.
