COMMUTERS on Monash Freeway can expect changes in speed limits beginning this week, with the introduction of a major work zone in the centre of the freeway for the widening project.
Motorists will begin to notice yellow lines between EastLink and Clyde Road marking temporary lanes.
Traffic lanes will start to be realigned in the evening and the speed limit reduced during off-peak periods to minimise disruption.
Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan said the widening project would add an extra lane in each direction between Eastlink and Clyde Road in Berwick to help traffic flow faster on the Monash thoroughfare.
“We are alerting drivers to these works, so they can consider the impact on their daily commute and plan ahead for the change in traffic conditions,” Mr Donnellan said.
“We’re asking motorists to be patient, allow extra travel time and drive safely. We thank you for your patience while works are underway.”
Temporary barriers are to be installed around the centre of the freeway where the widening will occur to provide safety during construction.
The first stage of the project has been completed, ensuring the shoulder of the road is “smoother and stronger” so that it can be used as a traffic lane.
The upgrade will see more than 30 kilometres of additional lanes and is expected to create more than 400 jobs during construction.
