Demand unsteady on larger yard

VEALER numbers almost doubled at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange last week, bringing the yarding numbers up to 422 head.
Demand was mixed with heifers and steers gaining on recent weeks.
Vealers remained firm and bullock saw a drop in demand easing in the lighter condition pens.
The vealer pens contained several pen lots of good to very good head which saw the top lift 10 cents.
Best quality veal were 10 to 12 cents dearer with the secondary veal firm on the previous week.
Extra numbers in the heifer section were welcomed and demand lifted the top and average prices.
A few less steers remained firm for the top pens and several pen lots of well finished head resulted in a good lift in the average price.
The week’s yard average was two cents up at 318 cents.
Thirty-three bullocks topped at 306 cents, back two cents, and averaged 230.5 cents, 54 heifers topped at 355.6 cents, up 15 cents, and averaged 293.6 cents, up 18 cents, 31 steers topped at 324.6 cents, firm, and averaged 303.6 cents, up 12 cents, and 302 veal topped at 400.6 cents, up 10 cents, and averaged 342.2 cents, firm.
There were a few extra head on Thursday, bull numbers were up and with demand slightly easier, there was an easing in prices which resulted in the 38 bulls selling to a top of 265.2 cents, back 24 cents and the average eased 20 cents to 242.2 cents.
A total of 281 cows topped out at 285.2 cents, back three cents on the previous week, demand was steady and this kept the average for cows firm at 215 cents.
There were 19 bullock on offer which made to 285.6 cents to average 264.3 cents, and the week’s yard average was steady at 221.9 cents.
