THIEVES have stolen timber from a primary school that had been intended to build children’s sandpits in Garfield.
About $1700 worth of decking boards were taken from Garfield Primary School overnight on Tuesday 10 January after a builder began constructing four sandpits surrounded by decking.
Parents and friends committee volunteer Cindy Talbot said the money had been raised by the school community over the past 12 months.
“It has left everybody angry and heartbroken,“ she said.
“We have been busily fund-raising, working very hard, to raise the money to make this project happen.
“This is not the first time. We get a lot of vandalism at the school, and things often get broken or stolen.
“The builder has finished the sandpits for us, but it’s going to cost us more money.“
Ms Talbot said the incidents had left the children and school community disappointed.
“You’d think that these kind of things wouldn’t happen in such a small community. But there you go,” she said.
“It’s only a small school, and when we raise money to help the kids.“
