Art grows in the garden

A historic Pakenham residence will host local artists for a two-day demonstration.
Cardinia Art Society’s Art in the Garden will this year be held at Margaret and Tom Slattery’s 1880s property on Slattery Place.
Nestled in the heart of town, the quarter-acre block features stunning gardens surrounding the large Federation-style home.
Mr Slattery said the garden was full of “strange sculptures and bits of recycled rust”, along with a wide variety of plants.
But this isn’t a serious or formal garden.
“Visitors will need to embrace the silliness,” Mr Slattery said.
This year’s event will include artist demonstrations in a wide range of mediums, including basket weaving, light installation, computer generated imagery and eco dyeing.
Event manager Jillian Ronald said the weekend would feature plenty of opportunities for the local community to get involved.
“People are fascinated by the processes artists go through and we wanted to give the public a glimpse into some of those practices,” Ms Ronald said.
The popular Mad Hatter’s Tea Party from last year’s inaugural Gembrook event will also return, giving visitors a chance to “enjoy the crazy atmosphere, wear some rabbit ears and enjoy a cuppa and something to eat”.
Art in the Garden will be held on 4 and 5 March from 11am to 4pm at 40 Slattery Place, Pakenham.
Admission is $8 per adult or $6 for concession holders. Children under 18 are free.
