A friend’s experience of alopecia and struggle with self-esteem inspired St Margaret’s year 12 student Lauren Herbert to donate her hair and raise money for the Alopecia Foundation.
Alopecia is an autoimmune disease that causes hair to fall out in small, random patches, most commonly on the scalp.
The exact cause is unknown and there is currently no known cure.
Lauren first became aware of the disease when she was in Year 7 and has wanted to help ever since.
“I want to raise awareness among as many people as possible,” Lauren said.
On Tuesday 21 March Lauren, Keira Vukovic-Smith and Brydie Mitchell had their hair cut in front of the whole school.
Lauren said she felt “a bit nervous” but she wanted to raise awareness by doing it.
“I’ve prepared myself, and I I’m really excited to do,” she said speaking to the Gazette the day before.
The hair donations will be used to make human hair wigs for people with alopecia.
Head of St Margaret’s Senior School Fiona Williams said the school was extremely proud of Lauren, Keira and Brydie for donating their hair.
“Lauren has taken positive action to support her friend who suffers from alopecia.
“The money raised for research, and the hair the girls have donated, will provide some relief to all suffers of alopecia,” she said.
Lauren said $2000 to $3000 had been raised within the last month thanks to school students, family and friends.
