Cardinia Shire Council is cracking down on property crime in public spaces which has left children without play equipment.
Following the theft of a number of birds nest swings and play equipment from parks across Cardinia Shire in recent months, council has publicly condemned the theft and vandalism of public equipment.
Council’s team leader of safe and inclusive communities David Lane told the Gazette thefts of council resources from public spaces were deeply felt by all members of the community, not just the shire.
“Particularly when equipment is stolen from playgrounds, there is an inconvenience on parents and children who go there but are unable to play,” Mr Lane said.
“And then of course, the cost of replacement or repairs is worn by council.”
Reassuring residents recent crimes rates hadn’t had “any significant increases”, Mr Lane said the council was taking a preventative measure to deter future occurrences.
But combating crime was a community approach, he said, requiring the effort of both council and residents.
He called for residents to “be alert” of any suspicious behaviour, particularly around playgrounds.
“We want people to keep an eye out. If they see something, report it,” Mr Lane said.
Crime Stoppers’ 1800 333 000 was the best number, the council manager said, however it was also worthwhile reporting it to the shire as well.
“We are often unaware (of thefts or vandalism) until we physically have crew out their conducting routine maintain on site,” Mr Lane said.
“It’s all about working together as a community and keeping an eye out.”
Any thefts or damage of council property can be reported to the shire on 1300 787 624.
