Students at Berwick Secondary College raised awareness for multiculturalism and diversity by making and selling food from several countries as part of Chisholm Day last week.
“Chisholm Learning Team is named after Caroline Chisholm, a social justice activist who made significant contributions to society by empowering the lives of women and families, building shelters for the needy and displaying a compassionate and caring nature towards all people, regardless of wealth or status,” said Chisholm Learning Team leader Chris Sacco.
The students selected The Smith Family Foundation as their charity of choice, a non-profit children’s charity whose goal is to create opportunities for disadvantaged children and their families.
On the day there was a range of stalls with varying cuisines – nachos from the Mexico stall, kebabs from Turkey, and pizzas from Italy, to name a few.
The Netherlands group sold hundreds of Dutch pancakes in about 10 minutes, so the students got crafty – offering cups of whipped cream and chocolate for a couple of dollars to use up their remaining supplies.
“It’s really cool, but really hectic!” said year seven student Chloe, who was running the very busy Mexican stall.
Team USA also found its supplies were quickly exhausted, with 32 boxes of donuts sold in 15 minutes.
The focus on diversity and multiculturalism got students thinking about the world beyond their school.
“It makes us want to go travelling!” said students Chloe and Kallea.
Students raised an impressive $1500 on the day which will be donated to The Smith Family Foundation.
