Cardinia Shire Council has banned advertising of political and non-community events on its public noticeboard.
Councillors implemented the ban at the 21 August council meeting following resident complaints after the billboard, located on Pakenham’s Princes Highway, posted political messages from Gembrook MP Brad Battin.
Councillor Michael Schilling said was important that the council was not perceived as favouring or promoting one political party over another.
Deputy Mayor Jodie Owen agreed, stating she had received a phone call from an extremely upset resident about the material.
It is understood that Brad Battin had sought the council’s permission to display the material, however the implemented changes mean the signage will be removed.
The council has maintained the decision was based on the council’s responsibility to remain impartial on political matters, and had nothing to do with Mr Battin personally.
Mr Battin he was amazed at the “short sightedness” of the council.
“For seven years I have paid for advertising for local community groups so every cent they raise can go back into the community,” Mr Battin said.
