The Stars shine bright

OH the Garfield Stars were happy as they proudly walked off the field shortly before 4:30 at Buln Buln’s Station Street home ground this afternoon (Saturday).

The first line of their theme song explained it all in the simplest of terms, as the visitors became the first team in season 2015 to defeat the Lyrebirds – 10.10 (70) to 7.9 (51).

It was a match that had it all – big hits, hard tackles, plenty of talk, and some outstanding individual efforts from some of the league’s most talented players.

The Lyrebirds lost the contest, but once again proved their quality in a tough, hard slog. With a decisive breeze blowing to the scoreboard end throughout the day, they had their chances and shouldn’t be discouraged. It’s clear Eastwell’s men will be there when the whips are cracking in September and that the group remains one of the competition’s top sides.

But this clash showed more about Garfield than it did Buln Buln. It showed that the Stars’ best can match it with anyone, and that their upside – when they finally have a full, confident side on the park – is scary.

Pick up a copy of the Gazette first thing Wednesday morning for much more on the Stars’ win, including post-match comments from player-coach Ryan Hendy.
