Fire risk remains high

CARDINIA CFA group officer Phil Craig has warned residents to remain alert this summer with the risk of fire high in the region.
“We are in one of the most fire-prone parts of the state,” he said.
“Certainly the Cardinia area from north of the highway is particularly prone to risk, as is the Bass Coast and Mornington.”
He said while it was too early to tell whether conditions could be as bad as 2009, the region could still have a fire.
“If there are a few hot days in a row, if that happens – there could be a fire,” he said.
“There has been a lot of good prevention work to prevent risk by local brigades, the council, VicRoads and other agencies.
“But the risk is still there.”
