Vendors happier

VENDORS at Wednesday’s Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, came away a little happier, as prices across the board recorded rises, all be it some only slightly. A smaller yarding of 73 bullocks saw a five-cent increase on average to 148. This could have been larger except for a few very light condition head among the pens. Bullocks this week ranged from 135 to 162.2.
Thirty extra heifers saw a very good jump of 11 cents to 143.6. Quality was a little better than average, with heifers ranging from 113.6 to 176.2.
One hundred and eleven steers rose two cents on average to 150 with good store steers yarded for the sale. Very few lighter head were on offer, with prices ranging from 116.6 to 172.6.
Six hundred and eighty five vealers, or 69 per cent of the yarding had a minor increase on average to 163.2, a good portion of the veal saw lighter store calves which kept the average back overall, and indicated that the heavier veal saw a larger rise which was evident in the top price of 205.2. Heavy veal made from 80 cents to 205.2 and light veal 100.2 to 196.6.
The price trend carried over to Thursday with bulls making an average of 131.1, a rise of 5.5 cents, with a range of 110 to 150 cents.
Three hundred and sixty cows also saw better price movement and sold to strong demand to average 5.5 cents better at 114.1. Cows ranged from 80 to 166.6 cents. Nineteen bullocks averaged 133.9 cents per kilogram or $931 per head.
