One of the best

LYN Treble describes Bunyip as a rural community that has remained small enough to appreciate the life of individuals.
For many in the community, they could describe her in just the same way.
Ms Treble took time out of her busy role from the Bunyip and District Support Group on Friday when the Cardinia Shire acknowledged her work in the community, presenting her with a Community Service award.
Her work with the cancer support group has provided many fighting the disease with the hope and strength they need to go on.
Ms Treble said members of the group were her motivation to continue.
“So many close friendships have been formed,” she said.
“To witness anxiety turn into hope, to see initial thoughts of dying change to concentration on living – it’s all worthwhile.”
While providing support to group members can have an effect on the health of the leaders, Ms Treble has been able to cope.
“I think I have learnt over the years that what matters is how you see yourself,” she said.
“Just like how a cat looks in the mirror and sees a lion.”
The cancer support group has 42 members who are supported in various capacities.
The group has run since 1985 and provides information about cancer at monthly gatherings, but does not give medical advice.
Cancer support is not limited to monthly meetings, as it can include a meal roster service, assisting with local transport, shopping and giving carers some time off.
“But the most important service is emotional support,” Ms Treble said.
“Sometimes it can be difficult to talk to your own family about cancer and talking to someone who has had a similar experience makes a big difference.”
The group meets on the first Thursday of each month at various venues.
