Festivities are a treat

THE Emus Group children at Bayles Pre-School have welcomed the Chinese New Year with a party to celebrate one of their classmate’s Chinese heritage.
Tai, along with his mother Kristal, cooked up authentic Chinese dishes for the children to taste.
Kristal demonstrated the use of traditional cooking techniques and implements and served up a delicious menu including sticky rice, sweet corn and sago soup and stir-fried noodles.
Kristal also brought in Chinese treasures for the children to discover including clothes, coins, crockery, and decorations like dragons and lanterns.
Emma’s mum Rose added to the fun of the day by dressing up as a Chinese lady and creating a wonderful Chinese dragon out of an old dressing gown, which the children were keen to climb under to create the dragon’s body.
The children also learnt how to say ‘ni hao’ which is Chinese for ‘hello’ and ‘xie xie’ (pronounced sheh sheh) which means ‘thankyou’.
At the end of the session, each child received a noodle box, chopsticks, a red envelope with a gold coin, chocolate gold coin, Chinese crackers and a fortune cookie.
