Good demand for heavy steers

RESULTS from the market at VLE Pakenham will test how many heavy steers and bullocks are left in the state, as demand was very strong for these, averaging 10 cents to 14 cents per kilogram dearer.
Generally, the larger yarding sold to strong demand, and the overall price increase was between five cents and 10 cents per kilogram, on top of the previous week’s rises.
The quality of the yarding was better over all classes of cattle, but it was obvious that there was a lack of vealers and grown steers, as these sold to the best competition.
The penning of 800 vealers included a large range of weights, but generally the quality was good to very good.
The strong competition saw numerous sales over 200 cents with a number of multiple sales to 210 cents per kilogram.
The top price was 215 cents, with other good quality vealers making from 168 cents to 195 cents per kilogram.
The 780 yearlings sold well with most sales being from 155 cents to 184 cents with some supplementary fed cattle making to 195 cents per kilogram.
A feature of the sale was the prices for grown steers, which ranged from 158 cents to 177 cents per kilogram.
The best sales for heavy yearling steers mouthed 0 to 2 teeth was up to 184 cents per kilogram.
A small number of grown heifers and cows also sold well, making between 122 cents and 155 cents per kilogram.
