Market on the rise

PRICES continued in an upward trend for the fat cattle sale at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, last Wednesday, with an extra 120 head yarded.
Competition was brisk with 61 buyers recorded, quality was very good in all categories with vealers reaching a top of 220 cents.
A good yarding of bullocks saw prices rise to 178.6 cents with the range beginning at 140 cents, the average this sale was 9.5 cents better at 169.2 cents.
Heifers penned saw a four cent increase to 150.3 cents, some light quality heifers saw the range start at 80.2 cents with good heifers making to 182.6 cents.
Steers were steady with a light rise of two cents to 156.7 cents, and for the 148 head yarded the range was 116 cents to 183.2 cents.
With prices well into the 200 cent margin, vealers sold to strong demand, with 16 per cent of the yarding making the 200 cents or better, this week’s average was seven cents higher at 176 cents with heavy veal ranging from 98.2 cents to 220 cents and light veal 70.2 cents to 217 cents.
A higher percentage of dairy choppers on Thursday eased the average weight for the sale by 30 kilograms per head, but made little impact on demand and price, with the average price for cows rising by three cents to 121.5 cents, with 502 head penned, range for cows was 50 cents to 158 cents for heavy, and 93.6 cents to 117.6 cents for light.
Bullocks sold to excellent demand selling from 148 cents to 155 cents to average 148.5 cents.
Bulls also rose on average this week, lifting 3.5 cents to 134.5 cents, bulls made from 112.6 cents to 155 cents.
