Top ladies at Berwick

VICTORIA’S best lady bowlers will be on show at the Berwick Bowling Club this month as the club hosts the State Champion of Champions competition.
Club ladies’ president Wendy West said locals could expect to see some exceptional bowling as the players competed on Wednesday and Thursday, 17 and 18 March.
“Basically all the ladies have already won in their own club tournament and then played off against other clubs in their region,” she said.
“They will all be really good players.”
The club is expecting up to 400 people on the first day of play, with numbers dwindling on the second day of the knockout competition.
The Champion of Champions singles event will also be held in conjunction with the state pairs finals.
Mrs West said they would have three competitors from each of the 16 zones in Victoria, as well as their supporters, but numbers will most likely dwindle as competitors are knocked out of the competition,” she said.
“Our volunteers will be catering for our guests and members with a sausage sizzles and cakes.”
Mrs West said this would be the first time Berwick hosted the event, with a lack of accommodation a problem.
“On our application to host the event we said we would offer home-stays to address the lack of accommodation in Berwick,” she said.
“Although this is a ladies’ event, the whole club is 100 per cent behind us and our visitors can expect some country hospitality.
“It will also be great for Berwick businesses having such an influx of people.”
For now Mrs West will keep her fingers crossed for fine weather, although the club has reserved the Friday to make up for any lost time in the event of rain.
