Yarding higher due to holiday but plainer

THERE is no market at VLE Pakenham next Monday due to the public holiday, and coupled with the very good prices of late, there was a large increase in supply.
Along with the 40 per cent increase in numbers came a larger percentage of plainer cattle, although there was still a lot of good top quality cattle penned.
The sale was operated with all of the regular buyers in attendance, and demand was strong for most classes of cattle.
Very strong competition for vealers saw these sell at rates from three cents to six cents per kilogram dearer, while the balance of the yarding was mostly unchanged to four cents per kilogram cheaper.
With prices still increasing, the top prices of 221 cents was achieved, and most of the B muscle calves made between 190 cents and 215 cents per kilogram.
Good quality C muscle vealers made from 175 cents to 205 cents with feedlots and re-stockers paying from 155 cents to 185 cents per kilogram for plainer grades.
Some very good quality was seen among the 1,100 yearlings sold, which included supplementary fed steers and heifers.
These achieved the higher prices making to 194 cents, while most of the good quality grass fattened steers made from 162 cents to 178 cents per kilogram.
Similar quality heifers made from 150 cents to 175 cents, while most of the plainer condition cattle made between 140 cents and 155 cents per kilogram.
The balance of the yarding was a mixture of older cattle, which included around 250 grown steers and bullocks.
Prices here were slightly lower, although the quality was marginally plainer with C muscle steers and bullocks making from 154 cents to 177 cents per kilogram. Other steers and heifers made from 125 cents to 154 cents per kilogram.
