Break leads to price rise

A BREAK of two weeks between sales at VLE Pakenham and some higher prices over that period led to a lift of six cents to 14 cents per kilogram for most of the large penning offered.
There were some very good quality vealers penned, although the percentage of these is getting smaller.
Most of the yarding were yearlings, which varied a lot in weight and quality, and there was a good penning of grown steers and bullocks yarded.
There was one extra buyer for grown steers mouthered 0 to 2 teeth, and this aided a lift of seven cents to 11 cents per kilogram for C muscle steers.
Although the percentage of vealers is easing there was still very good competition on all calves, especially some of the light weight calves weighing less than 300 kilograms liveweight.
The best B muscle vealers made from 210 cents to 231.6 cents with numerous sales of others from 175 cents to 215 cents per kilogram.
Feedlot demand was very strong, and wide range of weights and condition was purchased.
Better bred C muscle cattle made from 175 cents to 198 cents, while restockers paid between 200 cents and 210 cents per kilogram for a large line of calves offered by The Abbey from Yarra Glen.
Other cattle purchased to feed-on made from 145 cents to 175 cents per kilogram for plainer shape and poorer condition yearlings.
Strong competition for all better quality yearlings saw some supplementary fed steers and heifers make from 185 cents to 230 cents, while most grass fattened cattle made from 165 cents to 195 cents per kilogram.
Demand varied for the plainer shape D muscle cattle with prices for a large range of weight vary between 145 cents and 172 cents per kilogram.
Solid demand for grown steers and bullocks saw these heavy steers make between 168 cents and 188 cents per kilogram.
